The Pelham JV boys team defeated Anniston 51-46 at Pelham High School. The Panthers trailed for most of the game but outscored Anniston 30-22 in the second half.
Anniston had the lead until 4:06 in the third quarter, when Justin Allison went coast to coast for a layup and the Panthers led 28-27 and kept the lead for the rest of the game. “Down the stretch we kept our composure,” said Panthers JV head coach Lucas McDonald. “We executed at the end of the game when we needed to, we didn’t play a great game but we scraped and scraped and scraped and we got the win.”
Tyler Wages hit a 65-footer at the buzzer, but the Panthers trailed 13-6 after the first quarter.
Anniston led 22-10 with 3:05 left in the second quarter for their biggest lead of the game. A Seth Torman rebound and layup with a Allison 3-pointer closed the gap at 24-21 Anniston at the half.
In the third quarter, Pelham outscored Anniston 11-7 thanks to a Wages 3-pointer. The Panthers led 32-31 after the third quarter.
In the fourth quarter with 6:25 left in the game, Torman made a layup with put the Panthers up three points. With 4:07 left in the fourth, Torman hit two free throws to put the Panthers up five points.
With 3:35 left in the game, a Elijah Hudson layup and a rebound and layup put the Panthers up 44-37. With 1:13 left in the fourth quarter, Allison hit another 3-pointer to give the Panthers up 49-44. Anniston cut the lead to 49-46 with :28 seconds left, but Allison hit two free throws with :02 seconds to ice the game for the Panthers.
Allison led the Panthers with 21 points for the Panthers. “Justin (Allison) came in a played really well for us tonight,” added McDonald. “He gave us quality minutes and all seven guys gave us some quality minutes. We have to understand with these seven, this group, we have to be ready to go, continue to work everyday in practice when we step into the gym.”
Hudson added 10 points, Wages eight points and Torman six points for Pelham.
