After organizing the first soccer team in Riverchase Middle School history, Coach McDonald took over the Pelham High School boys program in 2007. Pelham was a three win team in 2006 and Coach McDonald rebuilt the program into a playoff team in three short years. Since 2009, Pelham has advanced to the AHSAA playoffs every year except 2014.

Coach McDonald is 174-132-25 overall in 13 seasons at Pelham and has reached the AHSAA playoffs 10 times.

2015 was a historic year for the Panthers with the team reaching the AHSAA Final Four for the first time in school hisory. Pelham would lose to 2015 champions Ft. Payne in the semifinals 0-1. The Panthers finished ranked #3 in 6A in 2015 and reached the rank of  #1 during the season for the first time in school history.

2016 was a return to the AHSAA Final Four before losing to the 2016 champions Cullman in the semifinals. The Panthers finished ranked #4 in 6A in 2016, with regular season wins over the final #1 and #3 teams in 6A.

In 2017 the Panthers earned their first AHSAA State Championship in boy’s soccer.  The team set a school record for wins for a season with 22 and set a record with only 28 allowed goals on the year. The Panthers defeated Cullman 2-0 in the state championship.

2019 was another trip to the Final Four with the team losing to the state champion St. Paul’s 2-1 in the semifinals. Pelham would finish #4 in the final ranking for the year.

Coach McDonald lettered in soccer for four seasons at Hillcrest High School 1993-1996 and played at the University of Montevallo 1999-2000 for Coach Rob King.

Coach McDonald is married to the former Ginger Hand of Jemison, Alabma. Together they have two children, Conner (13) and Anna (11)
